Peter’s top tips for buying a new TV in 2024/2025.

Buying a new TV can feel overwhelming with so many brands and models offering a range of features. How do you choose one that delivers the best value for your money while staying future-proof in the evolving world of smart homes and streaming services? To help you navigate this decision, Peter has put together his top 5 tips for choosing the perfect TV.

Keep reading to learn more about how TV technology and our viewing habits are changing, both now and in the future.

1. TV Quality

Generally, a quality TV, that will stand the test of time, start at around $1,000. While cheaper TVs are available, often these don’t last and are not user-friendly.

2. Convenience

Some new TVs now come with a home screen that acts as a central hub for all your entertainment needs. This home screen features pre-installed apps and easy access to popular TV channels and streaming services. Ask the salesperson to show you how to add and install new apps so you can confirm this is a feature of the TV and easy to do.

3. Budget

Stay within your budget. Sometimes you won’t notice the difference between a TV that costs an extra $1,000.  Remember, when you get it home, you won’t be benchmarking it against other TVs like you will in the store.

4. Location

Before heading to the store, pace out the distance from the TV location in your home to where your head will be when watching it (i.e. on the lounge). Then, when at the store, pace out this same distance to get a realistic interpretation of a comfortable viewing experience (i.e. will the TV be too big or too small). For example, when in the store, most customers stand within a few feet of the TVs on display. This is not realistic.

5. Size

If possible, go one size bigger than what you think you need. I rarely hear customers complain their TV is too big.  I do hear people complain that their TV is too small.

tv smart home integration

Innovative TV technology and features

Below Peter has summarised the innovative innovative features of the latest TVs that offer convenience and a better viewing experience. As smart home technology continues to evolve, TVs are increasingly becoming integral to managing a fully connected home, bringing entertainment and home automation together in a seamless user experience.

Expanded streaming and app support

TVs come with more built-in apps, access to local and global streaming services, and integration with popular platforms like Netflix, Disney+, and YouTube. Personalisation through custom app arrangements is becoming standard.

Smart Home integration

New TVs can function as smart home hubs, controlling compatible devices such as lights, thermostats, and security cameras via integrated virtual assistants like Google Assistant or Alexa.

Higher refresh rates

TVs now support refresh rates up to 144Hz or more, making them ideal for gamers looking for smoother, more responsive gameplay.

8K Resolution

While 4K resolution has become standard, 8K TVs are increasingly prevalent, offering even sharper detail and greater depth in visuals, though content availability is still growing.

Mini-LED and Micro-LED technology

These technologies provide superior brightness and contrast, allowing for more vivid colors, deeper blacks, and thinner TV designs compared to traditional LED displays.

OLED advancements

OLED panels are improving in brightness, color accuracy, and longevity, continuing to be a favorite for those seeking premium picture quality.

The OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) panel on a TV is a display technology where each pixel emits its own light, unlike traditional LED TVs that use a backlight to illuminate the pixels. This self-emissive property allows OLED panels to control brightness at the pixel level, resulting in deeper blacks, more vibrant colors, and higher contrast.

Advanced AI upscaling

Built-in AI processors enhance lower-resolution content to look nearly as sharp as native 4K or 8K, improving the quality of non-HD broadcasts and older media.

Immersive sound technology

Dolby Atmos and other 3D audio technologies are now common, offering rich, surround-sound experiences without the need for external speakers.

Sustainability features

Television and audio visual equipment manufacturers are focusing on energy efficiency, eco-friendly packaging, and recyclable materials, aligning with global trends toward sustainability.

Increased interactivity

Enhanced interactivity is predicted, with voice control, gestures, and even virtual reality or augmented reality experiences becoming more refined and responsive.
