From VHS to USB: Preserving Old Family Memories on Sydney’s Northern Beaches

Stack of old VHS tapes with handwritten labels, ready for a VHS to USB transfer in Warriewood, Northern Beaches

A customer recently dropped a lovely stack of tapes at my place in Warriewood, on the Northern Beaches, for a VHS to USB transfer. It’s the kind of job I really enjoy.

Old video tapes hold onto things you’d forgotten you ever filmed. This batch had overseas travel footage, some home movies, and even a couple of tapes of historic building projects around Sydney. That’s the thing about VHS and VHS-C tapes: you never quite know what’s on them until they’re playing on a screen again.

Why Old Tapes Need Saving Before They Fade

The problem is, tapes like these don’t last forever. Magnetic tape wears out over time, whether you play it or not. The coating that holds the picture and sound can flake, stretch or lose quality as the years go by. Australia’s National Film and Sound Archive has been warning about this for years.

Machines to play the tapes are getting harder to find, too. If you’ve got a box of tapes in a cupboard, there’s a good chance the footage on them is fading a little more each year.

Turning VHS, VHS-C and MiniDV Tapes Into Digital Files

Converting VHS, VHS-C and MiniDV tapes to USB solves that problem for good. Once the footage is on a USB, it no longer depends on a decaying tape or a VCR that might not even turn on anymore.

You can watch it on any TV, laptop or phone, back it up, and share it with family without worrying about the original wearing out.

VHS to USB Drop-Off Service in Warriewood

For anyone on the Northern Beaches or North Shore, I run this as a drop-off service at my place in Warriewood. It keeps the process simple, and each tape gets the attention it needs.

Each tape plays through in real time while I transfer it, so I can often finish a single tape overnight. The more tapes you drop off, the longer it takes, but most jobs are ready within a couple of days to a week. There’s more detail on my tape transfer service page.

Old family tapes, travel footage and home movies of relatives who’ve since passed are all worth saving. Converting them is one of those jobs that feels small at the time but means a lot down the track.
