Getting the TV mounting height right is one of the most important parts of any wall mount. I recently mounted a 65-inch Samsung for a returning customer in Castle Cove, on the North Shore. It was a brand new home, and they hadn’t moved their furniture in yet.
Normally I’d wait for the TV cabinet and lounge to be in place before I touch a drill. Here’s why, and how I worked around it this time.
How I Normally Work Out TV Mounting Height
Most TV cabinets are somewhere between 40cm and 60cm tall. Most customers like a gap of about 20 to 25cm between the top of the cabinet and the bottom of the TV. So the cabinet does a lot of the work in setting the height.
Bigger screens change that. A 75 or 85-inch TV is much taller, so it usually needs to sit a little lower to stay comfortable to watch.
Where possible, I get the customer to sit in their normal spot on the lounge. Then we fine-tune the height together, rather than just going off a formula. Every room is different, and so is every family.
Setting the TV Mounting Height in Castle Cove Without the Furniture
This job didn’t have a lounge or cabinet in the house to work from. But the customer was on site and already knew the exact height of the cabinet they’d ordered. That gave us a real number to build from.
I added the usual 20 to 25cm gap on top of the cabinet height. Then I checked it against what usually works for a 65-inch TV before I committed to the bracket position.
Why Getting the Height Right Matters More on a 65-Inch Screen
At 65 inches, a few centimetres either way makes a bigger difference than on a smaller TV. More of the screen sits above and below eye level.
Mounting slightly low rather than slightly high is usually the safer call. That’s especially true once the lounge arrives, because everyone sits lower than they stood during the install.
If you’re still choosing a screen, my guide on what size TV to buy can help. Jobs for returning customers are always good ones, like this one and a recent job in Artarmon.
