Walking into a big electronics showroom can genuinely throw off your sense of scale. Screens look enormous lined up under bright lights, and a size that felt “too much” in-store often ends up looking just right once it’s actually on a lounge room wall. In over 25 years installing TVs across the Northern Beaches and North Shore, I can count on one hand the customers who’ve told me they went too big. Going too small is the far more common regret.
A Rough Guide to TV Size vs Viewing Distance
As a general guide for 4K TVs:
- 1.5–2m viewing distance → 50–55 inches (bedrooms, small units)
- 2–2.5m viewing distance → 55–65 inches (standard living rooms)
- 2.5–3.2m viewing distance → 75–85 inches (open-plan living, media rooms)
- 3.2m or more → 85 inches and up (dedicated theatre rooms, larger spaces)
These line up reasonably well with the official guidance TV manufacturers and industry bodies publish, but treat them as a starting point rather than a strict rule — personal preference, room brightness, and how the TV sits in the space all matter too.
The Sizes I Actually Install Most on the Northern Beaches
Numbers on a chart are one thing; what I see on the job is another. The two sizes I fit most often, by a clear margin, are 55-inch and 65-inch. After that, people tend to jump straight to a 75-inch, and then an 85-inch for bigger living areas. For bedrooms, 43-inch used to be the standard, but I’m installing a lot more 55-inch TVs in bedrooms these days too.
Why Wall Mounting Changes the Sizing Decision
A wall-mounted TV usually sits further from your seating position than one on a low cabinet would, since it’s flush against the wall rather than sitting forward on furniture. That means if you’re planning to wall mount, you can generally go one size up from what the distance guide suggests without it feeling oversized.
A Few Sizing Mistakes Worth Avoiding
- TV sizes are measured diagonally, not across the width — easy to misjudge with a tape measure
- A bigger, heavier TV needs proper stud location or the right heavy-duty wall anchors — not something to guess at
- Showrooms force you to stand close; always measure your own room’s real seating distance before you shop, not the distance you stood in-store
