A New LG TV for a 93-Year-Old in Avalon

Some jobs stick with you. This was one of them.

I got a call from a resident at Pittwater Village in Avalon — a 93-year-old whose LG TV had finally given up on her. The remote buttons had worn completely smooth over the years, labels long gone, with the on/off and volume barely responding. Her Fetch Mini remote wasn’t in much better shape after years of daily use.

The new TV was a few days away, so I did what any practical bloke would do — grabbed some blue tape and labelled the buttons right on the front of the TV. Volume up, volume down, on/off. Simple. She could keep watching her shows while we sorted the rest. (See photo below — sometimes you just make do!)

LG Smart TV Setup in Avalon — Finding the Right TV for a Smaller Stand

Here’s something worth knowing if you’re shopping for a replacement TV on the Northern Beaches: most modern televisions have legs that sit at the far ends of the screen. Works fine for most setups — but not when your stand has a narrow centre platform.

We needed a centre-stand model, and tracking one down took a bit of research. Once the right LG 50” arrived, we got straight into it:

• ✅ Wi-Fi connected and tested
• ✅ LG account created and registered
• ✅ Software fully updated
• ✅ Apps downloaded and logged in — ABC iview, 7Plus, 9Now, Netflix and Stan, all ready to go

Smart TV Installation Tips for Elderly Parents on the Northern Beaches

One thing I always mention when setting up a new LG TV for an older resident — the new LG remotes are very minimalist. They use a pointer/cursor feature that a lot of older users find frustrating and hard to navigate.

A universal remote with number buttons makes a huge difference. Being able to press 2, 7, 9 or 10 directly — without hunting through menus — is so much more intuitive for everyday use.

This job was out in Avalon, but I help families and seniors all across the Northern Beaches — from Palm Beach and Newport through to Narrabeen, Collaroy, Dee Why and Manly.

Need a new TV set up properly — not just plugged in, but actually ready to use?

Whether it’s for yourself, a parent, or a grandparent, I’ll make sure everything is sorted before I leave. No confusing remotes, no mess, no stress.
