This TV wall mount in Willoughby was a little different to most. Instead of a plain plasterboard wall, the family’s new 55-inch LG went into a custom built-in unit. It had a TV niche, shelving on both sides for photo frames and cabinets running underneath. So it needed a bit more checking before the drill came out.
Fitting a TV Wall Mount Into Built-In Cabinetry in Willoughby
With custom cabinetry, you can’t assume the panel behind the TV niche will hold weight like a stud wall. Some units have a solid backing panel. Others are thinner MDF with gaps behind them. So before fitting the bracket, I checked what was behind the panel. Then I made sure the fixings went into something solid. I also lined the bracket up dead centre in the niche, so the TV sits evenly between the shelves on each side.
Connecting the Sonos Playbar and Nintendo
Once the TV was up, I reconnected the family’s Sonos Playbar on the shelf below. A Playbar doesn’t have an HDMI port, so it connects to the TV with an optical cable. After that, I connected their Nintendo to the TV with HDMI.
With a built-in unit, it pays to get every input and remote working properly on the day. After all, you can’t easily get to the cables later without pulling the TV back out of the niche.
Planning a Built-In TV Unit? Tips for North Shore Homes
Custom cabinetry looks great, and it hides a lot of clutter. If you’re having a unit made, these few things make the TV install much easier:
- Solid backing behind the TV where the bracket will go.
- A cable hole or duct behind the TV, running down to the cabinets below.
- A power point behind the TV, fitted by a licensed electrician.
- Airflow for the gear in the cabinets, because consoles and set-top boxes get warm.
- A niche with room to spare, in case you go for a bigger TV later.
If you can, show your cabinetmaker the TV size before the unit is built. It’s much easier to get these right at the start than to fix them later.
