Moving House? Don’t Take the NBN Box – What Northern Beaches and North Shore Residents Need to Know

NBN FTTC Network Connection Device next to modem router showing do not remove from premises label Northern Beaches

Here’s something that comes up constantly when people move house — and it causes genuine headaches for the new owners. When you’re packing up your tech gear, you’ll spot a box somewhere in the house — often in a cupboard, the garage, or a utility area. It’s got some cables running in and out, it looks like it could be yours, and it ends up in a moving box.

It’s not yours. And it needs to stay.

What Is the NBN Box — and Why Can’t You Take It?

That white box is the NBN Network Connection Device — the point where the NBN network connects into the home. It’s hardwired into the building and is part of the property’s infrastructure, in the same way as the power meter or the smoke alarms.

Here’s the giveaway — if you look closely, it actually says “Do not remove from premises” right on the label. It’s not subtle!

If it gets taken, the people moving in won’t be able to connect their internet until a technician comes out to replace and reinstall the unit — and that can mean days or even weeks without internet waiting for an appointment. Not a great start in a new home.

So What Can You Actually Take?

Simple rule — the router is yours. That’s the separate box (usually sitting nearby) that creates your WiFi network and manages your internet connection. That one travels with you.

If it’s mounted to the wall and hardwired in — leave it. If it’s just sitting on a shelf and plugs into the NBN box — it’s yours to take.

Quick checklist for moving day:

• ✅ Leave the NBN connection box — it belongs to the property
• ✅ Take your router/modem — that one is yours
• ✅ If you’re unsure, check for the “Do not remove from premises” label
