Thinking about TV mounting? Most TVs don’t come with a wall bracket, and plenty of people aren’t sure what’s involved. I’ve been mounting TVs across the Northern Beaches and North Shore since 2002, so here’s what’s included and the questions I’m asked most.
What’s Included When I Do Your TV Mounting
- I supply the right bracket for your TV and your room.
- We choose the height and position together, with you sitting in your normal spot. I’ve written more about how I choose the TV height.
- I hide the cables inside the wall where possible, or run them in slim paintable conduit.
- I connect your Foxtel or streaming box, soundbar and other gear.
- Once it’s done, I tidy up and show you how everything works.
TV Mounting Questions
How long does TV mounting take?
As a rough guide, a wall mount with setup and a run-through takes about two hours. That covers choosing the height, fitting the bracket, hiding the cables, connecting your gear and showing you how it all works. Some jobs take a bit longer, depending on the wall and how much gear there is to connect.
Which bracket do I need?
Most rooms need a flat bracket, which holds the TV close to the wall. In fact, about 95% of the TVs I mount go on one. A swivel bracket suits rooms with more than one seating area, like open-plan living and dining. Tilting brackets, on the other hand, are rarely needed now. There’s more on TV wall mounting bracket types.
How long does a TV wall mount last?
A good bracket should last for many years, as long as it’s fixed properly into the studs and holds a TV within its weight limit. The fixing matters as much as the bracket itself. I’ve seen what happens when it isn’t done properly, which I wrote about in why DIY TV mounting can end in disaster.
Can you hide the cables?
Yes, in most cases. On plasterboard, I run the cables inside the wall. Solid brick has no cavity, however, so there the cables usually go in slim conduit instead. I’ve covered the different wall types in more detail.
Can my Foxtel box and other gear go somewhere else?
Yes. I can tuck your Foxtel or streaming box, Blu-ray player and other gear into a cabinet, or even put it in another room. That frees up space and keeps the area around the TV tidy.
Can I use one remote for everything?
Often, yes. Many TVs can control a soundbar or amplifier through the HDMI connection, so the TV remote handles the volume too. Where that’s not enough, a universal remote can bring everything together, and I can help you choose one.
Is wall mounting safer with young kids?
Yes. A TV fixed properly to the wall can’t be pulled over. The NSW Government also recommends securing TVs to the wall, because toppling furniture and TVs injure hundreds of children each year.
