This TV setup in St Ives replaced a TV that had done a solid 18 years of service. The customer’s new 50-inch Sony had just arrived. She wanted everything connected and working properly, rather than having to figure it all out herself.
TV Setup in St Ives: Connecting Foxtel and the DVD Player
First, I reconnected her existing Foxtel box and DVD player to the new TV with HDMI cables. I set up the inputs so switching between them is simple, rather than something she has to think about every time. After 18 years on the old set, even small things like the remote and the inputs are worth getting right from the start.
Setting Up Google TV and the Streaming Apps in St Ives
With the connections sorted, the rest of the job was on the software side. Sony TVs run Google TV, so I signed her into her Google account. Then I set up Netflix, ABC iview, SBS On Demand, 7plus, 9Now and the 10 app. That way, everything she watches regularly was ready to go.
I also added a handful of extra apps she wasn’t using yet, in case she wants them down the track. It’s a small thing, but it means she won’t need to call someone out just to add an app later.
Finally, I ran the Sony software update. As a result, the TV started life fully up to date, rather than asking for an update the first time she turned it on.
Learning the New Remote
Before I left, I ran her through the basics on the new remote. I showed her how to jump between Foxtel, the DVD player and the streaming apps without getting lost in the menus. New TVs set things up a little differently to the old ones. Besides, 18 years is a long time between remotes. So it’s worth a few minutes making sure she wasn’t left guessing.
How to Make Your New TV Setup Quicker
A few things make the job faster on the day:
- Have your wifi name and password handy.
- Find the email addresses and passwords for your streaming apps.
- Keep a phone or tablet nearby, because most apps now sign in with a QR code on the TV.
- Leave the new TV in its box. I’ll unpack it and set it up properly.
New TV Setup in St Ives or Elsewhere on the North Shore?
Not every job is a wall mount. Maybe you’ve bought a new TV and want it connected to your Foxtel box, DVD player or soundbar, with your streaming apps signed in. That’s exactly the kind of job I do all the time across the North Shore and Northern Beaches. If your current TV is just slow, a streaming box might fix it instead.
