I mounted a 65-inch Sony onto a VJ-panelled feature wall in a new-build Warriewood townhouse last week, and it’s a job that catches installers out if they haven’t dealt with this wall type before.
Why VJ Panelling Makes TV Wall Mounting Tricky in Northern Beaches Homes
On a normal plasterboard wall, finding a stud is quick work. VJ panelling sits over the top of the actual wall frame, so the studs and noggins (the horizontal blocking a bracket needs to grip onto) are hidden and don’t always land where you’d expect. Drill in the wrong spot and you’re either hitting empty cavity or leaving a mark in tongue-and-groove timber that’s a lot harder to touch up invisibly than gyprock. I worked through the panelling to map the framing before putting a single hole in the wall, so the bracket went straight into solid timber first go.
Hiding the Cables: No Shortcuts on This Warriewood Feature Wall
Once the bracket was up, I ran every cable inside the wall cavity instead of using surface conduit. On a feature wall like this, a visible cable channel would have wrecked the look of the panelling, so it was worth the extra time to keep it all concealed. End result: the TV sits flush, and there’s nothing on the wall but the screen.
Why This Job Matters for Northern Beaches Renovations
VJ panelling and other feature walls are turning up more often in newer builds across the Northern Beaches, and they’re one of the trickier wall types to get right. A bracket that isn’t anchored into real timber can work loose over time, and fixing a mistake in panelling isn’t a quick patch-and-paint like it would be on plasterboard. If you’ve got VJ panelling, shiplap or a similar feature wall and you’re thinking about a TV mount, it’s worth getting the wall checked properly before anyone starts drilling.
